"As a baby, in many of my photos, I'm wearing mittens. This is not because I was cold but because I would scratch my face until it bled. I've had eczema my entire life which disappears intermittently with the seasons. It is currently not terrible, but that's beside the point."  

Scratching Piece is a site-specific performance art piece in which the performer scratches and then lotions their entire body. It plays off of Yoko Ono's "Cut Piece," but the focus is not on what humans will do given control over their own bodies but what a body can do to itself. The piece additionally is a reflection on cycles of destruction and healing that come with human conditions and vices. 

Video and photo documentation of the performance itself have been lost. Above is a performance score along with an "after" photo. Below is a video about the class in which the performance was germinated and performed. The artist can be seen wearing a red shirt, performing in another student's piece.
